What Is Positive Ions, Negative Ions, and Plasma Ions?

  • Positive ions generally refer to carbon dioxide molecules that have been stripped of its electrons. It has been scientifically proven that excessive exposure to positive ions can cause fatigue, tension, anxiety and other negative effects on human.
  • Negative ions are created when molecules acquire negatively charged electrons. Negative ions can increase the oxygen content in human blood, enhance myocardial function, reduce blood pressure, promote metabolism, improve immunity, significantly improve people’s mental status, etc.
  • Plasma is created when certain type of gas is ionized to a certain extent. Plasma has a wide range of applications in material processing, metallurgy, aerospace, nuclear, etc. Its main characteristics lie in its strong sterilization effect and short time of action.

How does Air Ionization Work?

  • A negative ion purifier will actively release high-density negative ions into the air so that they can quickly capture positive ions in the air and produce a neutralizing effect.
  • Neutral particles undergo a strong electrical force generated by a negative charge, resulting in polarity changes when they combine with one or more electrons.
  • High-density negative ions carry negative charges and increase the density of the negative electrode in the surrounding environment.
  • Regardless their size or nature, all particles produce a negative charge.
  • A large number of negative charge increases the repulsive effects between particles, driving them down to the ground of the room (which is usually positively charged).

Plasma Ion Generator

A plasma generator can raise low voltage to positive and negative high voltage. The high voltage can ionize the air to produce a large number of positive and negative ions. There are usually about 1.5 times as many negative ions as positive ones. In the air, the neutralization of the two types of ions will release energy to sterilize the nearby bacteria. Due to the quantity advantage, excessive negative ions can also achieve the effects of dust removal, smoke elimination, odor elimination, and improve air quality.

Advantages:

  • Can achieve a broad-spectrum sterilization from bacteria to spores.
  • Can realize the sterilization of medical or electronic instruments which are sensitive to heat at room temperature.
  • Suitable for non-chemical sterilization of items that cannot be sterilized with alcohol.
  • No dead angle problem exists in ultraviolet sterilization.
  • No cooling time problem after a high temperature sterilization.
  • No longtime ventilation problem after chemical treatments such as ethylene oxide.
  • No ozone or UV residue problems after the sterilization.
Same sterilization effect can be achieved with 1/3 of the energy consumption of UV sterilization.
  • Compared with around 5 years of service life in ultraviolet sterilization products, a plasma ion generator can be used for over 10 years.
  • No need to replace any consumables.

Disadvantages:

High temperature spark or arc discharge caused by high temperature discharge make it not a good choice for biomedical applications.
Dielectric barrier discharge, surface discharge, plasma jet and other methods used in the generation of low-temperature plasma are not suitable for the manufacture of equipment for large-area sterilization.

Application Range:

Hospitals
Pharmaceutical Industry
Schools
Airports
Conference Rooms
Etc

Negative Ion Generator

When a negative ion generator is working to generate negative ions, the input AC or DC current will first be raised to AC high voltage and then converted to DC negative high voltage. Through a release tip made of metal or carbon, DC negative high pressure will release a large amount of electrons. These electrons will then be captured by oxygen molecules in the air to form negative ions.

Negative ions can absorb small particles in the air because they are negatively charged. Particles will gain weight due to the absorption of negative ions and eventually fall to the ground. Negative ions can also combine with bacteria and lead to a structural change and realize a sterilization effect.

Advantages:

  • Can be used for both dust removal and sterilization.
  • Make oxygen molecules easily absorbed by human and thus enhance the immunity.
  • The bactericidal effect exceeds that of 3% peroxyacetic acid.
  • Can better purify the air with the filtration and adsorption from HEPA.
  • Extend the shelf life of vegetables and fruits and maintain their nutritional content.
  • Sterilization can be achieved in the presence of human.

Disadvantages:

  • The formation of ozone during the generation of negative ions should be controlled.
  • There is no evidence that negative ions can kill viruses that have no cellular structure.

Application Range:

Home
Office
School
Hospitals
Etc

Bipolar Ion Generator

A bipolar ion generator works by splitting molecules in the air into positive and negative ions. Particles in the air will gain weight as they combine with positive or negative ions. They will eventually fall to the ground or be pulled towards air filters. With the attachment of positive or negative ions, bacteria, viruses, molds, and spores in the air will lose the hydrogen that necessary to form their protein coats. Without hydrogen, viruses can no longer infect. Bacteria or molds will also die because of a structural damage.

Advantages:

Helps to enhance the air filtration effect and improve the sterilization efficiency.
Can deal with VOCs, odors and other air pollutants that cause allergies, inflammation and even cancer.
Effective against pathogens both in the air and on the surface.
When used for VOC treatment, 99% coronavirus elimination can be achieved in 30 minutes with a HVAC system.
Been using to control the spread of pathogens in the health care industry for decades.
Can reduce the maintenance frequency and cost of a HVAC, even without a HVAC.

Disadvantages:

The ions generated can last only about 60 seconds, making it difficult to achieve the required concentration level required for complex piping systems.
A certain amount of ozone will be produced when it works.

Application Range:

Laboratories
Clean Rooms
Home
Air Purifiers
Air Conditioners
Etc
